1924 - Church building
The Woodland Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) was completed in 1924 under the supervision of architect H. A. Churchill of Lexington.
When newly called Pastor Hayes Farish reviewed the plans for his new church he called for changes to the basic design. The original design called for an Akron style sanctuary: a square space with the pulpit located in one corner and deep balconies over small Sunday school classrooms. But Farish preferred a self-contained sanctuary. The changes resulted in a modified Akron style with the pulpit along one wall, and a budget $103,000, approximately $30,000 over the original estimate. “Edgar C. Riley of Transylvania College, and later, President of Midway Junior College, secured pledges of almost $60,000. The Ladies Aid Society pledged $10,000, and the Daughters of Woodland another $5,000, but both organizations would raise much more.”[1]
