1924 - The first service
In 1924, when the present Woodland Christian Church held its first worship service, women had only been voting for four years. It was a different time.
That first service began with a darkened, empty sanctuary. But in front of the church were more than 500 congregants, who then marched into the sanctuary by candlelight. At just the right moment, every light in the building was switched on.
Before Pastor Hayes Farish pronounced the invocation, the congregation sang the traditional protestant Doxology from 1924 - the one a lot of us grew up with. Feel free to join in…
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise him, all creatures here below;
Praise him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
