1945 - Women of the 1930s, 40s and 50s
(A fashion show accompanied this Memory.)
During the 1930s, 40’s and 50’s, the female members of the congregation were those who hosted luncheons, teas, baby or bridal showers and other social occasions of the church. These ladies always donned hats and gloves to church as well as to those social activities.
It is believed that for a number of years, the women’s group “The Daughters of Woodland” served in this role. They dressed up ‘fancy’ and always wore aprons if serving food and beverages. They were the ones responsible for designing and making the aprons worn today by our models. The aprons were designed and made by these ladies and include a red cardinal, KY’s State Bird on the pocket of the organza fabric.
Gloves also played an important role in 1950s fashion, and a variety of styles were available. Beyond fashion, the Daughters wore gloves to warm their hands. Cars warmed slowly in those days. A person without gloves might arrive at church with freezing cold hands.
But Times have changed, and we no longer expect our ladies to wear these lovely memories.
