1956 - Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)
In 1956 the Woodland Christian Church changed its name. A resolution passed at the Des Moines convention of the Christian Church restored the name of the brotherhood to the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)...with “Disciples of Christ” in parentheses. The change was meant to differentiate ourselves from other churches that were using Christian as their designation.
The next year, the United Church of Christ was formed, and later, in 1989, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) would enter into full communion with UCC, which recognized the ordination of each other’s ministers and mutually recognized baptism.
Eighty-seven year old Rev. J. David Arnold of Manhattan, Kansas served Woodland as interim minister until July 1957, when a new era would begin.
