1987 – The Prather Property
In December of 1987 Woodland faced a difficult reality. The Church owned the lot next door, known as the Prather property. The church purchased the property in 1976 to secure the lot. But the house on that lot dated to the 1870’s, had been unoccupied for years before the purchase, and had fallen to such a state of disrepair that the church could not afford to restore it. But it was also on the Register of Historic Places.
The church invited several social service agencies to tour the property for potential use, but all declared it uninhabitable. The Board met with the Aylesford Neighborhood Association seeking solutions. But ultimately, the high cost of repairs combined with the risk to neighborhood children who took to playing around the house, caused the Board to demolish the house.
