1960-1961 Raymond Alexander
Dr. Raymond Alexander began his service as Woodland’s Pastor in January 1961. A graduate of Transylvania, Lane Seminary in Cincinnati, and the College of the Bible, Alexander also participated in the White House Conference on the Problems of Aging. This was a national effort to coordinate rehabilitative health services, in response to scientific advances which saw life expectancy leap from 50 years in 1900, to 70 years by 1950.
In other news, the church borrowed $17,00o from the Kentucky Female Orphan School in Midway, to purchase two parcels across Kentucky Avenue, where our parking lot now exists. The Orphan School is now known as Midway College.
The church purchased new communion ware, made of anodized aluminum trays in a silver finish. The individual chalices were metal and fit on small posts on the tray – but proved difficult to use and maintain. After a couple of years they were replaced by individual plastic cups.
Dr. Frank Dickey and the Education Committee compiled a list of things that could be done for the church by worthy unemployed people who would be paid from a special fund.
Miss Nancy Jo Kemper was named Editor of the Lafayette High School newspaper, which no doubt, helped her win a scholarship to the Yale Divinity School.
And, Mel Boyd’s phone number was 7-2058. That’s all.
