Since 1923 - The Woodland Echoes
Pastor Hayes Farish created a new communications tool for the congregation – the Woodland Echoes – the church newsletter which continues today. He wrote, "This is the first issue of 'Woodland Echoes.' The reception accorded this initial issue will determine future publications. The policy of this paper is to set forth the current activities of the Woodland Christian Church in a way that will acquaint the membership and many friends of the community with all constructive lines of endeavor being pursued by this Church. Many things can be set forth in these columns that would not otherwise get before the people. Our Policy: Woodland Christian Church stands in the center of this section of Lexington as an open channel thru which the full expression of the highest principles of essential Christianity can be made. Every department of Woodland Church is conducted in the open with a purpose to respond to every worthy need of the community. We know no favorites and recognize no 'cliques' or 'clans' or 'bosses.' This work is conducted by the people for the people. If anything in the work is going on that any member or friend fails to understand the reason for any such action, the office is open to thoroly [sic] inform anyone who has the interest to inquire. Every action of the Church has in it the purpose of the very highest service that a church can render the community."
First published on April 15, 1923, the newsletter was intended to acquaint the membership with all of the goings-on of the Church. For some time publication would be sporadic, before settling in to a monthly format.
If you want to learn more about our church history, I recommend that you pick up a copy of James Trader’s Echoes: 100 years of Woodland Christian Church. I understand we have several copies available, at the time of this writing.
These Woodland Memories rely heavily on Trader's work.
