1925-1978 Boy Scout Troop 6
By Jeanette Knowles, Central Christian Church[i]
In February of 1926, Boy Scout Troop 1 renewed its charter for a year. The Troop had been meeting at Woodland Christian Church all through 1925, but the 1926 re-registration is the earliest charter found in the Blue Grass Council file. Troop Committee members were Mrs. Margaret Marquis, Hayes Farish (Pastor at Woodland, age 39), Andrew Harmon, Mrs. John Bowman, Mrs. Ernest Bryan, and Dell Paul Walters, Sr. Roy Moreland was the Scoutmaster and Wiley Sims and Hughes Bronaugh were Assistant Scoutmasters. Fifteen boys ages 13-17 were enrolled as Boy Scouts.[ii] The Troop met continuously from this time until early 1978. Hayes Farish, as Pastor of the church until 1956, was listed as the Executive Representative for the church.
In December of 1927, when the troop charter was renewed, Troop 1 officially became Troop 6. Troop Committee members now were John H. Bowman, H. T. Young, and E. B. Patterson. At the end of 1929, a new Committee was Lawton Stokley. In 1936, the Troop re-registered 16 scouts and enrolled two new boys. In 1944, the Troop split into four patrols, two Patrols with eight boys each and two Patrols with four boys, for a total of 24 Boy Scouts.
The 1950s appears to have been the most active decade for Troop 6 at Woodland Christian Church. Renewing its Charter for 1950, Troop 6 re-registered 19 Boy Scouts, enrolled five Cub Scouts who had advanced, and added 17 boys who had never been a Scout, for a total of 41.[iii] The roster for 1952 indicates that a division was made for boys according to age: age 11, 12, & 13 would be Boy Scouts and boys ages 14 and over would now be Explorers. In 1952 there were 15 Boy Scouts and 15 Explorers.[iv]
By 1964 membership had faded to 11, and Raymond Alexander had become Pastor. Scout Committee members were Ralph Congleton, John Young, and Virgil Young. Scoutmaster was Paul Shaw, Jr. and Assistant Scoutmaster was William Andrews. The ages of the boys ranged from 11 to 14, and no Explorers were listed. By 1970 membership had faded to nine, and Alfred T. “Ted” Vimont, as Chairman of the church Board of Directors, was listed among the Executive Officers for Troop 6.
In 1975 only seven returning Scouts, ages 10-13, attended meetings at a new meeting place at 301 Oldham Avenue, the garage behind the house on the corner of High Street and Oldham. William K. Wheeler was listed as Chair of the Board of Directors of Woodland Church at the time. A hand-written note on the Chapter for that year suggests that Troop 6 was “dropped,” or dissolved, on April 1, 1975. However, apparently the Troop continued for another three years until it was again “dropped” on May 1, 1978. Mr. J. M. Alsip was listed as Chair of the Board of Directors at the time, and the Troop had six young members. There are no additional papers regarding Troop 6 after 1975.
